snake in road in north east Ga. mostly black. some white showing through at bottom of sides. First thought was black rat. Then I saw faint blotches narrowly devided on back. blotches were about twice as long as wide. belly solid white or off white with black spots under tail. about 3 feet long. thought it was well out of black pines range

Sounds like a younger black rat. They have blotches which fade as they mature. In some areas, they don't fade completely.

so they don't always have the black spots on there belly. thats what threw me off. black rat is about all it could be through process of elimination

I had a black rat over 5 feet long that still had white blotches on the back. I don't have enough experience with them to say answer about the belly spots.
