new WC garter morph?

brc995 Jun 01, 2010 06:51 PM

hey guys, two days ago i found this big girl sunning herself on my drive way. I'm 99.9% sure she is infact a garter but her pattern is awesome. i was wondering if this would be a completely new morph or if this is a common morph that ive come across maybe partially leucistic? here are some pictures

or maybe hypo i dont really know though because the snake for the most part lacks all checkered pattern.

What state do you live in ? What normal colored species do you find in the area where this one was found ? Congrats on a cool snake.

Last question, what color are the eyes ?

brc995 Jun 02, 2010 12:45 PM

I live in south jersey near the pinelands. it has red eyes but not like a true albino pink red, there like an auburn color. Also, for the most part all the garters around here look like your typical eastern. we get some real pretty ones but never any that look like this big girl. Ill take a couple close ups of her head for you tonight.

Awesome looking snake. And its looking to me like some sort of garter. You can clearly see a dorsal stripe on it as well as some side stripes. And you can see the brown zig-zagging its way up the sides there. Maybe a combination of genes in there? I'm not real big on garter genetics, but I am pretty good with corns. Looks to me like it could be similar to around a butter corn snake which is the combination of amelanistic and caramel or an amber which is the combination of hypo and caramel.

Looking at it a bit more, though, maybe its some sort of intergrade or hybrid? While all of the patterning and everything sure looks like a garter to me, that head is just slightly off from what I can see. Almost looks like the head's just not quite... I guess wide enough?

does look a bit like a yellow rat snake, doesn't it? the head isn't quite right but it could just be that pic, would still like to see head close up shots though.

It is definitely a garter snake everyone. It's just that it is different from any eastern garter I have ever seen, and easterns is what you would find in Jersey.

First thing I thought of was an Eastern garter x Northern brown snake. Both are live bearing and inhabit the same areas
Just a thought

It's definitely a garter. no doubt in my mind!

I call for a genetic profile on that snake!

celticvamp Jun 12, 2010 12:33 PM

My first thought from the pictures presented is actually a kingsnake. But If it's actually wild caught from where the original poster lives I'd say that's highly unlikely. The close picture of the head and seeing the scales on the head will without a doubt tell us what it is.

Concinnitor Jun 15, 2010 01:25 PM

That is amazing. I have never seen a garter quite like that one.

Concinnitor Jun 15, 2010 01:35 PM

You know, the more I look at it, the more it seems like it could be dekayi.
