boxies in the wild

varanid Jun 01, 2010 10:01 PM

went for a hike today; among other things, saw 3 different box turtles.

Box turtle one (on the trailhead)

can you see him now?

box turtle 2, eating a bug. About 1/2 mile from the first one

box turtle 3; another 2 miles or so on. I almost missed this one

At wildcat bluff nature preserve in amarillo, tx. it's mostly shortgrass prairie and mesquite trees.

We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion people if you had to be beautiful to get laid.

Are these Florida box turtles or Easterns? I'm trying to learn about my new local native species after moving to FL from the west coast

These are ornates; I'm in the Panhandle of Texas; easterns are limited to about the easternmost 1/3 of the state.

Nice looking ornates, they must be thick around there for you to see 3 out on a trail. Do you have 3 toes in the area too?

nope, just ornates here
I've seen more this season so far than in the last 2 years together; we've been really wet so far and I think it's been good for them.

Too cool! I saw an Eastern in my yard last week-lovey female. Naturally I left it in the wild to make babies Tess
