Oil spill and salt marsh snakes

jjenkins Jun 03, 2010 08:25 PM

Is anyone else concerned about the oil spill affecting the mangrove salt marsh watersnakes? I know these are uncommon to begin with, and I fear this spill may devastate them.

JYohe, if not mistaken, the reason the rig was so far out in the Gulf/deeper water was due to public pressure to not drill closer inshore in the event such a catastrophe happened. BP was not allowed to get a permit to drill closer to shore and as such had to drill that deep in the Gulf. There are rigs further out and deeper as we speak all drilling up a storm. The oil companies are not happy about the permit requirements, but do what they must to get the oil to the consumers. They know that drilling a such depths is riskier and more costly. Still, they are not allowed to drill closer to shore by virtue of their permit stipulations. Now, please do not mistake my post as coddling up to the Oil and Gas companies. Regardless of where they are permitted to drill I feel it is their responsiblity to keep their equipment and fail safes up to speed with respect to this situation. Criminal intent/negligence may still come up on this issue. This is a blow we will all be experiencing for several years, both ecologically and financially I am sure.

not years decades or centuries....

...my thought....drill 5 mile deep...oops...can't fix it....

drill on land....walk up and start to fix it in a minute....

...sucks.....really....

..stop making cars that use gas....ends story...we all work closer to home....no shipping cheap Chinese crap here....and we all open new companies right here like in the 1850's....I was born in this town like my parents..we all grew up here..could have walked to work...I live half a block from work...stupid to be born in Maine...move to Florida then Cali and drive 53 miles each way to work each day...you are a waster....LOL....

I know...won't happen...just like cigarettes kill people...so...let's keep making them?....ummm...just stop making them and everyone will have to quit?.....it can be done....?....

....ramblinggggssss......bedtime....>>>

Yes that’s what we need, the government to take away more of our rights and freedom. If people want to smoke and risk the chance of cancer, that is their decision to do it or not. Take that away? Takes away people rights and the government wont stop there. the more laws like that they pass the more and more this country starts to seem communist. if things keep going the way they are none of us will be able to keep and enjoy the herps so love so much. I just never understood people wanting the government to make laws just because they don’t like or agree with something.

As far as living closer to work, that would be great but just isn’t possible for everyone, I drive 40miles to and from work everyday, this economy is making it impossible to find jobs so I’ll take it where i can get it.

Just my 2-Cents, don’t mean to sound like I’m getting onto anyone
