Mangrove Snake Died (strange)

wlcmmtt Jun 05, 2010 06:31 PM

So, I've had this pair of Boiga Dendro Dendro for over a year. Both of them have were recent imports but acclimated very well. They were both treated for intestinal parasites several times (after they got here) and I know/trust the guy I got them from. They've eaten like clock work since then, and shed like normal, with the occasional exception. So today I'm soaking one of them in a rubbermaid tub, with regular tap water that I use to water them, and I put in a piece of slate. Got the rock from a friends house who has them for reptiles, so I at least know it wasnt treated with anything at his house. Let the snake soak for 30-45 minutes in warm water, like I have done before, but when I came back...dead as can be. Anyone have any thoughts on this? The other one is still looking great, is practically blue like an oil slick, never had a bad shed, and eats once every 7-10 days. They're kept identically, because the cage they're kept in is a two part acrylic cage, with a permanent divider in the middle. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Something went wrong no doubt. How big was this Boiga and how deep was the water? Temp/depth of water? How long did you leave it in there? I just soaked a 6' female Melanota in a 3' trash can w/1' of water in it...45 minutes max. Their skin is so thin that no more than that is necessary.

Your comment about treating them "several times" concerns me. My imports are treated after 90 days or so and only after at least 6 solid feedings. I only treat twice, 5 days apart w/Panacur and Flagyl. Sometines w/imports it ends up being an "oh well" situation wherein a snake rolls w/no discernable event to pin it on.

Hey, thanks for the response.

I didn't actually do the treatment for the parasites, the guy I got them from did...but, that was last year...like, last March I believe, so doubt that had anything to do with it.

As far as the water/size of the snake. The one that died was about 5.5-6ft long, and was in no more than an inch of water. I'm leary about too much water because I don't want to drown anything! Didn't leave him in there for longer than 30-45 minutes tops. Water was warm, I'd say 80 degrees. (been working with tropical fish for 8 years, and this water was only a bit warmer than how I kept my saltwater tanks.)

Had just soaked my burm in there the week before, but had already rinsed it out with uber hot water a couple days prior to the event. My point in saying that is that I don't think it had anything to do with the container. The ONLY variable was that rock, and the more I think about it, you know, the rock was outside. It could've just been a little bit of gas for the lawnmower or weedeater that dripped on it that could've leached out in to the water. I just dont know at this point. But it shook me up a little bit to have a snake trying to eat me because I woke it up, be dead within an hour.
