I live on SEA and there and its so difficult to find reptile vet over here. My friend needs amikacin and I'm just helping him buy it. I saw 100,250 and 500mg for sale. What do you usually use? Any help would be appreciated.

First, be aware of the toxicity issues involved with amikacin and the potential for serious side effects or possible fatality if an incorrect dosage is given. Secondly, there is a good possibility that there are other effective antibiotics that could be used with a lesser degree of side effects depending on the diagnosis. Also, make sure that this treatment option is in line with the medical problem being addressed. For these reasons it would be advantageous to consult with a vet if possible.

However, the decision on which strength of amikacin to use is based mostly on the size of the snake. The smaller the snake, the better it is to use a low strength solution so you are able to more accurately measure the correct dosage. With larger snakes, it is better to use a high strength solution so you are able to inject the proper dosage using the lowest possible volume of this solution.

I had a terrible experience with Amikacin in a hog island boa. If you decide to go with it, consider giving supplemental fluids with each dose. That stuff can be stupidly nephrotoxic if a snake isn't drinking normally. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Ceftazidime.
