Gravid or not?

caro2006 Jun 11, 2010 02:16 PM

Hello!
I wonder if a collared lizard femelle show her nice orange colors, really means that she is gravid or impregnated? Because sometimes my collared shows the orange and then she lose the color without laying eggs! Does anybody have a idea about that!? Can she just show orange when she is ready (mature)? Sorry if you don't understand my english... i speak french! Thank you for your help!

Showing the orange/red colour is a visual indication to all males that the female is ready.

Ok, so it just means that she is ready, but not necessary gravid!?

Hi, when they are ovulating/ with eggs/ they turn orangey stripes or splotches some just a small strip somewhere , others look so vibrant they look painted Okay, now this is the time a male will get pretty fired up and evenually they usually mate, which would then if all goes well make her eggs fertile. Sometimes the female even gets more orange after breeding. You usually know when they have eggs, they have a full / firm feel, sometimes you can even feel or see the outline of eggs.
** A female can lay eggs even if she has not been with a male.

* Now if you have a female that gets orangey and is full but never lays and then starts to get thinner again and her color may fade as time goes on then she may have re-absorbed her eggs, they are able to do this. Just as there are the sad times when they are full with eggs and time comes and they do not lay and become eggbound and usually the out come is not good.

So I hope I have maybe helped "somewhat" to clear some of this Orange color stuff up for you, hehehehee

Carole, You too have a very NICE site, love your collareds and tokays I never had a tokay, Very Cool, but do have a few species of gecko. Snow leopards, Central American banded and large Henkeli/ leaftail.

Best wishes with your collareds. Do you brumate/hybernate them in the cooler months? This helps alot with breeding, and fetility, but not nessesary for them to mate and have "some" fertile eggs.

Your Enlish is superb! I took French in 7th grade, oh my goodness life times ago, hahahaa, I can count pretty high, and do remember names for girl, boy, pencil, and a couple of other words, that's it.

Thank you Eve for you message and visit on my website!

Yes, they hibernate in the cooler season for 2months... it's very important for their health.

We can stay in touch to share our experience!
