"Dented" eyecap??

Shanemc88 Jun 15, 2010 01:51 PM

after his shed, my snake has what looks like a little indentation in one of his eyecaps; this has happened before after one of his previous sheds, but after shedding again it went back to normal. Could it be caused by rubbing on things in his cage while shedding? Should i be alarmed? thanks everyone

I have seen this on occasion in various boids including anacondas. I feel you hit it on the head and believe that with anacondas in particular, that they are doing this mostly during shedding events while removing the old skin from their heads. Their spectacle protrudes more than most other snakes, and is more prone to this occurrence. As long as it is a short term phenomenon, I don't see an issue with it. If it occurs frequently or lasts for extended periods, it could be a dehydration issue.

thanks for the prompt replies... i do not think it is a dehydration issue (or at least i hope not, i am doing everything i can to make sure he has enough water), since i give him a large dish to soak in every day for an hour, and there is always a smaller waterdish for him to drink from, and i have the humidity at least 50%(my house can get dry sometimes). he just shed yesterday and both caps came off, and the current ones have much smaller divets in them, which i suspect may be because the initial ones were deeper since he was really squirming to get that skin off last time (it still came off in one piece, eyecaps as well). i was worried it would affect his sight, but that seems fine. thanks again for the replies and i apologize for the run-on sentences.
