anyone have enclosures that are pretty?

casey414 Jun 17, 2010 10:22 AM

I just bought my first house and my backyard is a blank slate. No plants or trees, just grass. My boxies are still living at my parents' house until I can build an enclosure at my new house.

It seems that all the enclosures I find online are just wood or some kind of siding walls. Not very attractive. I want to have an enclosure that looks like a garden. But I'm not sure what to use as the walls. Does anyone have something like this? Any ideas? Pictures? Websites?

Thanks in advance!

Here is a photo of my box turtle pen and garden.
The walls are made out of 2 X 8 treated barn siding suitable for setting on the ground, around the bottom I attached a piece of hardware screen, plastic, about 6 inches deep so the turtles can't dig under. There are 3 ponds, big planter bottoms, for drinking and hanging out. There are also half pipe lengths, a 9 inch plastic pipe, cut in half and set around the garden under various plants. The turtles like to get inside and look out. There is a 1 foot buffer along the walls from the edge of the garden plus a larger area at one end for the turtles "open area". There are 2 blueberry bushes and the usual garden veggies, tomatoes, green peppers, cucumbers, cabbage and carrots. The dimensions are roughly about 18 x 10 feet for my turtles.

Here's some pictures of my turtle garden. I'm in the process of making a much bigger one and my Redfoot will use this one by himself now.

and they seem happy and very active and healthy, and the water is always fresh, filtered and clean. You can see pictures of the building process minus the pond installation (thats another series of photos) on my website on the "other reptiles page"

It's coming along, Jeff. Really looks like it's filling in.

I am but another with an unattractive wood enclosure... I would love to redo my with COR-TEN steel, but that will be a while off.

Well whatever you come up with, casey414, post some pictures.

Some traditional old-fashioned picket fences (see link for photo) have a solid panel along the base which would make them suitable for a turtle pen. You could adapt the fence design to suit your aesthetic but keep the solid panel across the base for the benefit of the turtles.

Here's a great starting point for fence ideas:
