Adding Second Adult Female to Tank

buddha04 Jun 17, 2010 06:28 PM

Any tips on adding a second adult female to my existing tank? I have a 20 gallon tank so I have enough space. Both leos are female and very close in size. The original female seems to be more territorial at the moment and not liking to share hiding spaces even though there is enough actual space. She has had other tank mates before but its been awhile. I have two hiding places and will add a third shortly. Is this just a phase (I hope) for the original leo to adapt to a new tank mate? Will they actually fight it out and realize they have no choice but to share?

It might help if you clean the tank and all of the cage decorations (and hideboxes) then rearrange everything and place the geckos together. That way you reduce the territorial 'claim' of the first gecko. They will probably still fight a little. Or at least walk around stiff legged and wave their tails in the air but they should eventually work it out and accept each others presence. I often do this when I put breeding pairs together as well.
I have had a few females that refuse to accept the company of other geckos of either sex, but that is very rare.

Good luck,
John
