Blood python finally eat after 3 weeks

St0n3_C0ld Jun 20, 2010 12:25 PM

I recently bought a blood python 3 weeks ago, it didn't feed for 3 weeks and finally it just ate a full-grown mouse(June 21 2010), it's amazing since this one is a baby blood and i tried juvenile one but it didn't work out and now it finally chooses a full-grown one ^^

The time i succeed, i changed the substrate (from a piece of newspaper to shredded newspaper) because i read from this forum that some guyz state baby blood pythons usually stay underneath and ambush preys and suggested to feed a stubborn baby on spaghnum moss (but since moss is hard to find at where i am so i changed it to shredded newspaper) and it succeed (thankss..!!)

The question is, i've heard snakes die because of impaction thing, could snakes die because you feed it on shredded paper or spaghnum moss? I worried the snake may ingest the substrate when eating (i didn't look at the snake when it ate since i feed it in darkness)
If some people here suggest to use moss, will the baby bloods die because of impaction? Thank you ^^

You should be fine with the shredded paper. Just don't let your little blood dehydrate, which increases the chances of impaction.

Um, what i know is that blood pythons are prone to cold attack, am I right?
If i keep it hydrated, how to prevent it from flu? thanks ^^

make sure you provide good temperatures, but not too hot.. He will move to the warm end if he feels cool, just make sure there are secure hides on the warm side too.

Shredded paper should break down alright in the stomach even if some is eaten with prey items...just make sure he doesn't end up eating a whole lot of it.

I'd say that sounds pretty normal for a baby blood. They like small spaces to feel secure, especially to get them started feeding. Keep doing what your doing and he should feed regularly. I wouldn't worry too much about impaction. Newspaper is fine.

Don't worry about him getting sick as long as the temperatures are good. He should have a temperature gradient with a warm end and a cooler end. I keep mine with the warm end ranging from about 93 to 95 degrees and the cool end ranging from 80 to 85 degrees. She seems to do well with that.

I just wanted to let you know, your temps seem extremely high for a blood python. Ambient temps should be around 82-84 and there's usually no need to give a blood a hot spot and if you do it shouldn't be any higher then 86-87max

Good luck on getting your little one to feed regularly ston3

thanks everyone ^^
soo in short, it's better to put the baby to a smaller container?

Well i'm gonna try feeding on shredded newspaper once more and if it succeed i will move the baby to a newspaper substrate container (not the shredded one), do u guyz ever have any problems moving this kind of baby from a shredded substrate container to a normal one? ^^
