mystery salamander

fivetoes Jun 21, 2010 07:01 PM

My Cat brought in a salamander last night from the marsh and I am trying to save it before I put it back. I can't figure out what species it is., it have five wire thin toes on each leg and three yellow stripes down it's black back which turn blue as they reach what's left of his tail. I live in Delaware, Any ideas?

Sounds like a two-lined salamander.

Not too familiar with Delaware herps, but sounds like a lizard. Newts/salamanders have 4 toes on the front and 5 on the back, and the toes on salamanders are generally not described as wire-like.

It did sound like a Two-lined, but CG had it right. It is most likely a Eumeces fasciatus, the Five-Lined skink.

It's a Five Lined skink. Not a salamander at all, but a lizard.
