ID from a shed?

varanid Jun 22, 2010 09:39 PM

found 2 rattlers (atrox both of 'em) and this shed tonight. I'm in Amarillo, TX, this was on a park about 3 miles north of town. Any ideas?

hold it up to a good bright light, and you should see the pattern left on the skin.it should be there, clear as day.

Doesn't look to have keeled scales, and the head parietals, etc..tell me it is a definite colubrid of some kind.

Like the other guy mentioned, held up to the right light, it will show a definite pattern, unless the snake was a solid patternless coloration.

Cool find!

My Texas rat shed this weekend and his skin is hanging on the edge fo the cage right beside my computer. The head scale patterns look very much like your photo in arrangement and proportion..

Looks like a coachwhip to me, short snout, big eyes, smooth scales and probably patternless

Both have very similar scales...so it's a toss up.

I guess I would go with 66% Coachwhip, 34% Racer if I had to bet!
