What causes Kinked Spines?

Z_G_Reptiles Jun 23, 2010 08:40 AM

So the twins hatched out yesterday and unfortunately they both have kinked spines, not horrible severe but pretty noticeable.
Does anyone know what can be the cause of this?

I have read that major inbreeding can do it, the sire and dam are completely unrelated so that's not it. The incubator was set at 90 with an internal temperature of 89 so that shouldn’t of been a problem.

My only other thought is because the egg was a normal sized egg with 2 snakes in it, I have read that too small of eggs may also be a reason for it, which I believe this is mine.

What are your thoughts?

heres the pics of them

Thanks
Zack

In your case, I think it is from crowding in the egg.

Does this correct after a while of being out of the egg?

I've heard of some kinking correct itself. Unfortunately/fortunately I do not have enough personal experience of my own with this issue. I did hatch an albino this year from a bad clutch. The tail was kinked and already appears to be correcting.

maybe minor kinks might but i know one of these has a pretty good one that i just dont see working itself out, I'm going to treat them like any other tho and hope they atleast turn into healthy little slugs. I know some people put down the ones with kinks but as long as it doesnt seem to be in pain or effecting them is a horrible manor I'm just going to stay on them and hope for the best. I'll offer them food in a few days

Hopefully its just kinks that can straighten out on their own...not sure how formed baby snake's bones are at birth...but if its not all full bone and still soft, it may straighten out to some extent. Only time will tell.

Nice pair of twins despite the kinks though..if the kinks are not a health concern or hampering in any way, they would still make great pets.

Check the wetness of your substrate. it needs to be dryer than you think.

I never really thought of that one, I always thought the lack of humidity could do it but never occurred to me that the substrate being too wet could also do it. On this occasion though I don’t believe this is it because the substrate wasn't very wet on the surface unless you dug into the substrate an inch or so.

Thanks for the input
Zack
