Albino Alligator Breeding

shawnheflick Jun 23, 2010 09:34 PM

Well Ladies and Gentlemen...the day after my Birthday last weekend I was given 31 eggs from Nilla (female albino gator)...now 5 days later they are banding and thus FERTILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So now we know...albinos are not sterile like some have suggested...but instead viable gorgeous gems!

I'll post some pics soon...

This is a remarkable day for me...as I have waited patiently (or not so) to see this come to fruition. Now I wait to see what promises to be one of the most spectacular projects ever to pierce an egg!!!

Stay Tuned!!!!

I'll be more excited when Leucistics are available to us. Which will probably never happen.
But regardless, thats great news. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

You probably have a better grasp on the situation than I do. But where are the Lucy's now and who would be willing to start a breeding program? To my knowledge of the 18 that were originally discovered (17.1) only 10.0 are still alive. 1.1 was discovered last year in LA, they are juveniles. Making 11.1 total. I know Audubon has 2 on display (1 at the aquarium and 1 at the zoo), Palm Beach Zoo has 1, Gatorland has 4 and I would think that the oil company has the other 3. I do not know who owns the 1.1 pair that was recently discovered.
Gatorland has expressed interest in trying to breed theirs, but all 4 are currently on display so it will be awhile before that happens.
Even if someone does breed, the offspring will be hets for leucism requiring them to be bred back to their fathers which will take even longer.Arggghh!
I'll just keep praying I can add one to my collection some time in my life time,

I think you are right on the money with locations...Gatorland has 3 Lucys an an Albino I do beleive though. It would be nice to do some poking around in Louisiana around late August

kachunga Jul 02, 2010 09:52 AM

They have 4, I just visited the park a few weeks ago. Also in talking to a former park employee, the park didnt even have to pay for them, which I thought was completely bizarre.
I'm with you on poking around in LA in the late summer. But I think all of the Lucy's were found on private land. Meaning it would be impossible to keep them if we even found anything.
I can see it now, Shawn and Bert's black market Lucy's. Get em' while you can.
LOL
