NEW PIC OF ICHABOD

Linda G Jun 27, 2010 10:14 AM

Cindy and all,

I was able to get a new picture of him. When I resized it I did cut off a little of his nose. I have been able to get most of the salt buildup off of his bottom lip. It has been a slow process but don't want to stress him too much. I have been using a q-tip and soaked with water and baby oil. I adopted him about 4 years ago. I really enjoy him. He is very friendly but shy. Let me know how he looks to all of you. Keep in mind he is bouncing back from brumation.

That is not salt secretion from his lower lip.
Salt (snalt) is only passed through it's nostrils.

Looks like caked on food sometimes caused
by chewing on wet or mushy food.

What have you been feeding it?

I would take more aggressive measures than a
damp q-tip. The caked on food (if that's what
it is) will only cause more complications in the
long run. The fact that the lip surface is covered
by it will only causes heat as well as lack of air
to the area in question, thus ... making this area
a good candidate for a bacterial breeding bed.

By "more aggressive measures" I mean an old
tooth brush moistened in a betadine/water solution
at about the color of a light tea. Try to do this at
least once daily followed by a light smear of a
topical antibiotic cream like SSD or even some
triple antibiotic cream that you might use on your
self will do.

Thanks for responding. I have just a very small area left to
remove. His lip looks fine underneath it. He was a rescue and I think was not given a really good diet. As a result, doesn't eat a real wide variety of food. He does love his bird seed and beans but is very picky about consistantly eating his greens, veggies and such. He does really like dandelion greens which are plentiful in summer but only eats them maybe once every couple of days. You mentioned it looks like he was eating mushy foods. Knowing his diet, I don't know what mushy foods he ate

Thanks for the information, I may just use a little antibiotic
cream just to be on the safe side.
