Callopistes

pinstripe15 Jun 28, 2010 11:45 AM

I just got back from a trip to Chile, and I met a herpetologist there who is doing work on Callopistes, the Chilean dwarf tegu.

I don't keep them myself, but I know they can be tricky to keep healthy for many years. He told me that their main prey is smaller lizards -- I don't know if people here realized this, but maybe anoles could be useful for training troublesome feeders.

People have been using anoles as feeders for decades now.

I don't keep much track of these things. The most up-to-date book I've read that had Callopistes info is about a decade old.

Not many people work with the Chilean dwarf tegu any longer.

A lot of people are also hesitant to feed anoles because of parasitism, but sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.

Callopistes is a lizard eater in natua because the opportunity to eat lizard is great were he lives.
In captivity these guys accept rodens, insects and fruits without any problem
