Egyptian Tortoise keepers

teq1 Jul 04, 2010 12:48 PM

I was wondering what kind of substrates you guys use. I'm currently using crushed oyster shell. I wanted to try play sand along with it but I don't know if it would harm them if they happened to ingest it. I was just curious as to what other people use for their egyptian tortoises. Thanks.

Check out the latest Reptiles Magazine for informative reading on Egyptian's. Another fine article by Ed (EJ) Pirog outlines some substrate methods including what you already use among other good husbandry advice.

I would recommend staying away from sand. It can cause intestinal blockages if the tortoises eat too much of it. The crushed oyster shell is better because it can be digested and it also absorbs water from the air keeping humidity low, which sand will not do. All the people/institutions which have the best success with Egyptians (in the East anyway) seem to use the crushed oyster shell as a substrate.
