Take me to Blood school

Natures_Fury Jul 07, 2010 08:00 AM

Althought I have been in the hobby for the past 10 yrs, I haven't really ever paid bloods/short-tails much attention. I am BORED TO DEATH with ball pythons and and lurking on the darkside and bloods seem to be more my style. Im gonna be setting up at the Atlanta Repticon show and Im sure there are gonna be sme bloods there. My question to you all is how would I go about telling the difference of the different bloods/short-tails? I maybe just generalizing, but they all look about the same.

Thanks.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about this. Brongersmai do not have subocular scales under their eyes. They have longer supralabial scales that go up from the lip and make direct contact with the eye. Borneos and Sumatrans have subocular scales underneath their eyes.

I've noticed animals for sale that are listed as "bloods" or "Malaysian" and if you look closely you can see they have subocular scales, which I believe means they are either not bloods (meaning Brongersmai) or they are intergrades.

I find it hard to tell the difference between sumatrans and borneos though, and intergrades.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

HEre's the best read out there right now....

Once you look at enough of them, you can start to really be able to distinguish between them.....some are tricky though.

There's also a nice side head comparison on the BloodPythons site.....
