new leo owner question

darkfall25 Jul 09, 2010 10:53 AM

Ive been a snake person for the most part, but in a recent trade I aquired my first Leopard Gecko. He's super mellow and tame, but he was a rescue animal from a kid who well, let him get a little too skinny. I have his temps at 88 on the warm side, and roughly 78 on the cool side. The previous owner was giving him superworms to fatten up a bit, since he's still pretty skinny. Ive only had him for two days, but he's shown ZERO interest in feeding. Now im used to snakes going for months without food, but i know Leo's eat almost daily, hence my concern. He has calcium and wax worms, but simply explores his environment at night, completely ignoring food. Should this be a concern? Im mainly worried due to the fact that he's skinny, i figured he'd ravenously eat anything nearby.

Can you post a pic of him to see how skinny he in fact is? You could try wax worms to try to fatten him up... they don't seem to be able to resist them. If you haven't yet, try crickets too because they are more active and movement triggers the feeding. Make sure he has a water dish as well. Good luck!

yea, ill attempt to snag a pic. He has a water dish, wax worms and a calcium dish, as well as a few hides in both the warm and cool areas. (i have a cellphone so the pic may be low quality

Apologies for the quality, again

His tail doesn't look too thin, but his arms are pretty puny. Someone here once suggested ripping the head off a meal worm and wiping the body (juicy side) along the lips of the leo which might trigger it to eat. When mine went off feed she took to the wax worms, which became problematic for a while because she tried holding out for them. Try the crickets too, movement is a good stimulus.
Also, when was the last bowel movement and shed?

Oh, and I reread your original post and see you have only had him 2 days. A lot of time rehoming will stress them out and cause them to go off feed. I'd give it a week, or so, to adjust to a new setting before I got too concerned.

yea, he made a couple bowel movements about 2-3 days ago, and has been urinating daily (kinda nice how leo's "consolidate" their bathroom habits, whereas my snakes go everywhere :P)

The fact that he had a bm is a good sign... food in the belly and no impaction. What kind of snakes? Got a ball back in January, making me a heavy-bodied snake fan for sure.

I have a cali king, and a pair of corns (the female's a creamsickle who dropped a clutch this afternoon, actually(

unfortunately, he's still hasn't touched food. He's briefly active in the sense that late at night he'll come out for a few mins, look around, and go back into his hide, and of course i see him in the early morning hours. I cant be certain if he's actually eating, but he's had no bowel movements since ive brought him home, which is approximately a week.

Ive offered him crickets today. He ate about 3 of them, which is great, as that means he's at least interested in them. Only downside is well, that seems like a small amount for one feeding.

He kept regurging his food, and was rapidly losing weight. I Began Treating him with repti aid, in an effort to give him gentle food. His activity was increased for a few days, but sadly, he didnt make it.
