C. barbatus "soaking" behavior

alyse_tiffany Jul 13, 2010 06:34 PM

I have a male C. barbatus that started soaking himself the past few weeks. He sits almost fully emersed with only his head out of the water, like a Shinasaurus. I origianally had a small water dish in with him and misted his enclosure 1-2 time daily until he started trying to get his whole body into the small dish. I replaced it with a larger shallow dish and continued to mist and now he sits like this for a couple hours per day. I have observed him soaking in cooler and warmer temps, he still activly drinks water off the sides of his cage. Could this be "cloacal drinking"? Has anyone observed this behavior before in Chamaeleolis? Just thought I'd mention this to hear other thoughts.

I keep Chamaeleolis Porcus, and I have never experienced that..

Any mites?

Do you mist him? If so how often? How is his setup?

I mist him 1-2 times per day. He is CB and I have not seen any mites. I have kept all three species and I have never seen this behavior before. The cage has a peat moss substrate and is full of live plants and twigs. He is feeding great on land snails and crickets. I just don't know if this bad or not.

Generally reptiles do this when they are dehydrated,I don't think it's specific to any species.

i just got three green anoles and i have them in a tank that stays 80% humidity and i still found two of them in my pound on a log soaking. i watched them longer and noticed that they were trying to shed. even though my tank has the humidity that they need they still like to "take a dip" before they shed.
with mine i have a little fish pound and i found that mine like to let the fish nibble on their bodies. i have found that they have done this each time right before they shed.
