Question about new Pixie Frog

jjennings Jul 14, 2010 09:37 AM

I recently got a Pixie Frog who is estimated to be somewhere around a year old. I've had him/her less than a week, so I may be jumping the gun a bit, since he may just still be adjusting to his new surroundings. Anyway, he is buried. Constantly. I know the heat and humidity in his environment are fine, so I am not worried about that. My big question is do I need to dig him out to feed him or will he come up when he gets hungry? Thanks in advance for helping me with the first of what I am sure will be many questions!

What is the set up like? What are the temps, humidity, substrate, etc.

Also his when and what was his last meal?

It is something you should get used to seeing. They stay burrowed for most of their life. He will come up when he gets ready to.

Congrats on the new pyxie.

He's in a 10 gallon tank with a mix of moss and peat for his substrate. This is what was suggested by the person I spoke with at the reptile show. He has a big water bowl in one side that is large and deep enough for him to get into and soak if he chooses.

I am not certain about the humidity exactly, but I am misting him and his habitat 2x-3x per day with distilled water. He is at room temp which is about 72. I've read conflicting things about whether or not he needs a heater, so I will be glad to hear that from an expert! Also, does he require special lighting? Some care sheets say yes and others say no.

He ate a killed fuzzy today (from tongs), so I guess he's feeling alright. I am not sure about how/when to clean and replace substrate since he pretty much stays hunkered down in the same spot.

Thanks in advance for any/all advice!

A 10 gallon is too small, even for a Pyxie that doesn't move much (most of them don't). I would say minimum 20 gallon. 72 degrees I think is too low. You might see slightly more activity and a better feeding response with warmer temps. I use a heat light in the winter, and no heating in the summer (my reptile room stays in the low to mid-80s most of the time. As far as substrate, I really like coconut fiber. It is really cheap, holds moisture really well, and doesn't cause impaction problems.
If you want lots of good information, check out FrogForum.net and find the Pyxie care sheet. There are also lots of threads that are great for pyxie-learning! Good luck!
