Count 'em. TWELVE EGGS!

Rosebuds Jul 14, 2010 06:09 PM

And Mom looks none the worst for wear!

I was working in my outer room today when I noticed that pretty Enola, Box canyon Red Back lady, was in the process of laying an egg. well, that was egg number 11. As soon as she finished she went to the food bowl and started eating, so I removed her to her BFs tank and she started pigging out. I went and prepared to collect the eggs, and when I looked up, she had laid another one! So Girl Friend just needed a little snack before she finished! lol

I sent these pics to Tom, and thought I would post them here too.
Eggs, and then the proud parents

That's awesome!! I too have a pair of Box Canyon redbacks and I'm hoping the male did his job. I saw him a few times attempting to mate though I don't know if he was ever successful. He is pretty much equally sized as the female which concerns me a little because I don't know if most successful matings are from males that are larger than the females. From your pic, it looks like your male is a bit bigger than your female. Do you know their weights? My female has that pre-ovulation look as shown by Gus in his last post. She weighs more than him now, but I haven't seen any outlines of eggs as of yet. Still hoping. Did you happen to catch your pair mating? If I'm as lucky as you and get some eggs and hopefully babies, we'll have to swap some youngsters.

Well, Enola gained and the eggs seemed barely visible until about two weeks ago, then she just looked round like a potato pancake and ate like a pig until about a week ago.

That male is 15 inches long with part of his tail missing. He is a very big boy and he is probably around 10 years old, from what I am told by Maureen and Tom. I do not know if they mated. He had problems when he came here late last year with metabolic issues. It wasn't calcium related as I took him to the vet for blood work. He leveled out, but retained some paralysis in two of his legs. They are in sight of other chucks and I did see lots of head bobbing, but I never actually saw mating, but then I have been super busy. Anyway, I had to toss one bad egg so far, but most of the rest seem to be hardening up, so we'll see.

Correction. The photo by Gus (RioBravo)of the 2 female chucks (pre-ovulation)was not in his last post but the one before that.
