Genetics/Breeding Question

traviswyattweber Aug 03, 2010 04:06 PM

I'm not at all new to keeping retics, but very new to breeding... looking to do it in the future.

This may be a dumb "beginner" question so sorry, but all questions are good questions...right? That's what a teacher once told me. Anyone who can answer it... thank you.

I have a male lavender and a female purple. What kind of babies can I expect from them when they come of breeding age?

Thank you! - Travis

You have a possibility of producing white, lavender and purple phase babies as long as they're both clark strain albinos... which most these days are.

Good Luck!!!

Thanks!

So, would that be 100% albino with roughly 1/3 white, 1/3 purple, and 1/3 lavender? Correct or no.....?

Thanks again! - Travis

That'd be 100% accurate as long as
a) both are indeed Clark strain albinos
b) both are not also het for another recessive

While both of those are likely true, I doubt there'd be much complaint if you found out they were both het Ghost or somesuch.

Best of luck!

That would not be correct.

You will not make whites.

Each offspring will have a 50% chance of being Purple and a 50% chance of being Lavender.

Jordan

Ps: Nice looking albinos!

There is a second gene which is controlling the amino acids which are making an incomplete protein version of the protein melanin. That gene is functionally expressed in 3 variations. All variations can be predicted by the parental type. White to white make white, white to purple makes lav, lav to white makes both white and lav, lav to purple makes purple and lav, lav to lav makes all 3 (this is where the confusion started), and purple to purple makes purple.

Thanks for the genetic breakdown explaining the possibilities of various phases of the offspring. Very helpful and interesting to know!

To the best of my knowledge you'll get approx. half lavenders and half purples
