Gravid Rosy boa question

Brandonsthaman Aug 04, 2010 10:33 AM

I have a female Coastal Rosy boa, that I believe is gravid. I came
home from work yesterday and there was some 'goo' in her cage (mucus
consistency). I assume it was some type of undeveloped embryo or
unfertilized egg material. I'm leaning towards undeveloped embryo
because I could make out what I believe were red veins in the 'goo'.
I kept peaking in on her to see if she passed anything else, or gave
birth, but she never did. She was doing a fair amount of slow
wriggling starting mid-body going towards the vent, which led me to
believe she was in labor. She did NOT shed prior to this event. She
is still very pregnant looking.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I am excited about my first
litter of babies, but I'm also concerned for my female's health.

Any and all input and responses are very appreciated.

Without seeing it, I'd guess that was a slug(infertile egg mass).
I see a couple a year.
I'm surprised, though, that there weren't more, or the babies weren't born yet.

JC,

Thanks for the response.

I also believe it was a slug. I'm also stumped as to why she hasn't had more slugs or babies. I guess I will just keep my fingers crossed that she's got some babies in there... Otherwise she needs to go on a diet BAD. LOL.

JC would know better than I am sure since he has had many more rosy babies than I but I thought I had heard tht the slugs come out a day to a week before fertile/ baby rosys are born.Keep us updated as to how long in between the infertile mass and live births. I have only had about 1 rosy give birth a year and so far have had no slugs, this year i have about 10 locality rosys that are gravid and so far none have passed any slugs. Good Luck

I've always had slugs & babies born at the same time...never have they popped out at different times.
I've seen them pop out first...in the middle...and at the end of a litter, so I find little rhyme nor reason to their nature.

Well here I am exactly one week later, and unfortunately I have NOTHING but bad news.

My boa died today.

An autopsy revealed that she was egg-bound. There were 9 babies ... I'm extremely heart-broken to say the least.

I only post this on the off chance that someone, with a similar issue, will read this post and recognize the problem.

Thanks for the follow up and sorry to hear about your Rosy. I have not had that issue before but I will keep an eye out for anything like that. Thanks Rich
