My first GTPs!

Chance Aug 07, 2010 10:36 AM

I picked up a couple of smoking GTPs from a friend recently. The male is an Aru type and was produced by Signal Herp. The female is a Jayapura type and was produced by Frantz Herp. He has gone through his change and is awesome to work with. His green and blues are more than stunning. She is a little over a year old and is in the midst of her color change. She is not quite so friendly but I'm sure she'll more than make up for it in appearance.

Here she is:

And here he is:

A fantastic looking pair! You cant go wrong buying from signal herp. Rico is the king of chondros, as Im sure you found out. Good luck with them both, and prepare yourself to NEED more of them in the future.

Thanks for the compliments. That is a fantastic sight you pictured!

I'm trying to resist the temptation to look through the tree boas/pythons classifieds because I know I don't need to drop the cash on another. If I ever do, I would really like to get an Aru female similar to the male I have. I'm really liking that locality's appearance compared to some of the others. Green and blue just seem to go together than green and yellow (in my very humble opinion....hah).

Something that has really surprised me is their desire to EAT. I fed them about four days after I got them, giving them time to settle in and such. They took f/t immediately. Maybe a whole two nights later they were cruising around again at night apparently looking for another feed. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, I mean they're basically just green arboreal carpets right? I didn't anticipate such a strong desire to feed so frequently.

The female just shed, need to get new pics. I didn't even know she was blue!

Mite phase? I would say so, but Im no authority on the subject. To me, any black flecking like that is mite phase. But the trait might have to be passed to offspring to verify it as a "phase" or "line". Dont know for sure. It is good that your snakes have a good appetite, but be careful not to overfeed. Chondros have a tendency to experiance rectal prolapse more easily than most other species. They will eat to their own detriment. They are almost always hungry, but dont always need to eat. One small meal a week or ten days is fine, with some of my adults being fed only twice a month. Good luck to you and your snakes. They are gorgeous.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm not ever one to over-feed my snakes so it's good to know that they don't need to eat often.

Interesting about the black flecking. Honestly I would prefer a completely green snake but I think it adds something interesting. I guess I'll find out, if I'm lucky enough to breed them and raise some of the hatchlings to see what they look like.

These things are just too photogenic, as compared to my other snakes that are generally too flighty for good pictures! These were taken with a proper camera whereas the others were taken with my cell.

Im with you. Not a big fan of mite phase. There are a few that ive seen that I like, black flecking on blue chondros looks pretty cool. Also there are a couple that are almost 50 50 green black banded, but these are very rare. The good news is that most chondro folks DO like mite phase, so producing some would pay off. Your Aru? is gorgeous.
