INDIAN PYTHONS

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Aug 09, 2010 06:45 AM

The Indian Python has all but dissapeared from Herpetoculture over the years. How many of you out there have PURE Python m. molurus ANYMORE? I'm just personally interested in what's around and who has them. Thanks

Hi Tom,

Nice to see this beautiful Indian!

I have animals orginating from both Pakistan and Southern India. Attached is the female from Pakistan local. Adults are on display at the San Diego Zoo. These are my favorite of the "big pythons". Awesome you are keeping this species of python. Too few of us...

Tom,
As you know, I just have the pure Sri Lanka molurus at this time. However, I only know of three other people that have pure Indian molurus besides you and Paul. Definitely not too many people currently working with pure animals, and not many pure specimens left. It's very unfortunate what has happened and the hybridization that has occurred with bivittatus. I think it is inexcusable to cross any of the rarer, or less accessible species in captivity, irregardless of the lame reasoning. Even though the breeder may know what they are, they have no control over what happens to them after they have left their facility, or how they are later identified or misrepresented. Once they have become genetically merged, that bloodline is lost forever.

I'm so glad that a few folks like you guys have kept these forms pure. Pimbura is even rarer to see than m. molurus. I brought in a small shipment of 6 pairs back in the early 1980's and they were always rare even before that. To hybridize or intergrade these snakes is a shame and I hate it when I see that happen.

Kelly,
could you throw up some pics of your Pimbura? What are the origins or your animals?
Thanks.
JQP.

Here are a few shots of them, and the middle photo is a male. I have reason to believe that they are related to a group Tom C. helped import a few decades ago. Also, if you are Joe P. from California, you may have also been involved and these may be related to some you had years ago. I would like to find out as much as possible, as information on this group is pretty scarce. Thanks,

Kelly

Kelly, the bottom pic is the type found in the more xeric area's and the darker ones were found in forested areas. Most I brought back were the ones that looked like Indian Pythons....thanks...I REALLY LIKE THE ONE IN THE BOTTOM PIC AND IS NICER THAN ANY I SAW IN SRI lANKA...Before anyone attacks me this is what I was told by Bradley Fernando and Gomini at the Zoo in Dehiwela in terms of color forms in the Pythons. I only found one roadkill pimbura...
