De-snake a dog?

Bushman Aug 10, 2010 11:51 AM

Is this the recommended method to keep dogs away from venomous snakes?
http://ridgewood-kennels.com/services/desnake.shtml

It seems unnecessarily cruel to the rattlesnakes used:

"The snakes used are rattlesnakes which have been defanged and have had their mouths stapled shut with surgical staples"

I'm not really a fan of snakes but this seems ridiculous.

I didnt look at the link, but seriously all you need is a small snake that likes to musk. Let it nail your dog once and there is nothing but respect.

I have seen it in my house all the time!

And honestly FAR more effective! A nice skunking will do wonders. My american bulldog still drags his head on the ground when he sees colubrids.

We have used coachwips or aggressive gophers. The dogs will get the hin after a good bite to the muzzle. The stapling deal is the equivalent of declawing a cat and removing its teeth.....Doesn't hit mainstream media because its not a furry animal......

My wife called Navasota Animal Control to report this as animal cruelty and they told her that they already have had a tip and he is being investigated. They said he does have all the correct permits to keep these rattlers but that doesn't give him the right to pull their fangs and staple their mouth shut.

I find it odd tho because you dont need permits to keep native non threatened hots here that I'm aware of, unless Grimes county or Navasota have their own ordinance for that.

I bet he kills every snake he sees...
my dobie has been bitten on the snout 3 times by copperheads.
they really dont get the message because the bite is no more painful initially than a wasp sting. only later does the real pain come and they DO NOT associate the two together.
unfortunately our dogs see us handle snakes all the time so they lose fear of them. a bought a shock collar and anytime she got near any snake in the field I shocked her for a while. now I just yell if she pursues, and reward if she keeps her distance.

I have supplied rattlesnakes for dog training, but the snakes are put in small screen mesh cages amd placed in the field for the dogs to stumble on and then the dogs are hit with a shock collar. This works very well with no harm to the snakes.

i'm afraid my Bloodhound is going to snort a Moc the way she run with her supper sniffer on the ground. But she did kill an adult Racoon out in the tortoises enclouser. I think I'll try a meen Coach or big yellow rat. How do you set it up where the snake stays put for the encounter. I'm also thinking the snake wount fare well. Let me know how its done Thanks. I used to provide EDBs to a local veterinarian who did this type of training in a similar way to what Terry stated. No harm to the snake and a very important training lesson for dogs destined to be in fields where they may encounter venomous snakes.
