Congrats - she's really cool, Mike.
It seems pretty clear that the aberrant patterns are based on the parent' genetics. Now as to the heritability of the trait -- it should be possible to prove that through back-crossing offspring to the parents and/or through sibling matings (especially siblings that display the trait).
