Summer heat issue?

sgv_jester Aug 19, 2010 01:35 AM

Hi guys, today in cali it was 95degrees in my area outside, indoor temp in my bedroom, about 83degrees.

What do you guys do to prevent your cresteds from getting sick from the hot heat? Will crested geckos survive indoor temps of 83-84degrees?

For a very short period of time, adults can tolerate temperatures ranging between 83-84F. Babies don't have the resilience adults do and they could easily overheat in those temperature ranges.

WHen you are having hot days, I suggest either moving your cresteds into a cooler room, or closer the floor. (often temperatures can be as much as 5 degrees cooler on the floor then they would be on a shelf or stand at waist height (ie 3-4 feet off the ground). Placing an ice cube into a small dish with water can also help cool the cage or at least provide a cooler area for the geckos to be near.

Thank you for posting as I was wondering the same thing, picking up my first crested babies this evening and it's been so very hot here in Cali and I don't have AC.

I was going to keep the cresties in my snake room which is kept at 75-80, but the care sheets make it seem like that is going to be too warm. That 75 is about the top temp they should be at. Is that correct?

thanks,
-April

If 80F is the hottest that room ever gets and it doesn't stay more 80F than less than that, it should be ok. I also recommend putting the crested gecko cage closer to the floor...if not on the floor directly. It may not reach 80F on the floor since heat rises.

I set them up in the kitchen (I have a big kitchen) because that is the coolest room in the house, it was either that or a closet. They seem to be doing well and the temps stay around 70-73 at night and 76-78 day. I might have them winter in the snake room but in the warm months that room can get over 80 pretty easily.
Thanks again!
