FL Press: Man Bitten By Snake in Lowe's

Aug 20, 2010 06:14 AM

THE LEDGER (Lakeland, Florida) 18 August 10 Silver Springs Man Bitten By Snake in Lowe's Store (Austin L. Miller, Ocala Star-Banner)
Ken Reedy is recovering today from a snake bite he received Tuesday.
Reedy said he and his friend Mark Wright were inside the garden section of the Lowe's when he reached down to pick up pavers and a snake bit him on the left hand.
Wright's friend said they stepped on the snake and crushed its head. Pavers were also put on top of it.
"He said it stung, and it hurt real bad. We called the ambulance,” Reedy said.
The snake bit the 43-year-old man's hand twice about 3:30 p.m., said Brian Stoothoff, Ocala Fire Rescue battalion chief. The snake was taken with the victim to Ocala Regional Medical Center so doctors could determine the species and know how to treat the patient.
The Orlando Sentinel reports the snake was a pit viper, a family of snakes that includes copper heads and rattle snakes, but no other information was available on it.
Wright was in good condition at the hospital Tuesday evening, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
A Lowe's store manager declined comment.

Any further info on what species it was? On a similar note I used to work at a grocery store about 10 years ago and we found a large, highly venomous spider in a shipment of bananas. I never heard what kind it was, just that a professor at the local college was called and he came over and identified it and took it away.
