Recommended space for Adult Cribos?

mbrawley Aug 20, 2010 03:11 PM

For those of you who breed cribos, what is the recommended space for adults? Are CB-70 size rack systems suitable or is something else needed?

Please excuse my ignorance, I just didn't realize how big they get as adults and don't know very moch about them.

Lot's of opinions and exceptions I am sure, but a lot of us try to provide 6' length cages or better. The 72" x 30" x 18" height cages have worked will for me. The long cage design allows animals to stretch and accomodates breeding behavior, and makes it easier to have some thermal gradient, i.e. a spot light or heater at one end, and relatively cooler at the opposite.

You can use smaller for juveniles, I use those sweater box types in a rack system for young'uns. Mine spend so much time in hide boxes, but it is fun to watch them cruise around in a spacious cage, i.e. feeding time or breeding, or rarely, basking.

good luck, Vic

Thanks for the reply, Vic.

As I said before, I don't know much about them, but I have become really interested in them recently....they're some of the coolest snakes I've ever seen.

Thanks again!

Vic is totally right in his statement that at least six foot cages should be used for fully adult Drymarchon. Sure, you can get away with smaller cages, but you're not doing justice to such big, active animals. And the mere fact that they will often breed and reproduce in smaller cages does not mean that such cages are appropriate and adequate for them.

If I found the right info those are 34"x18"(LxW). That is not enough space even for a small female Black Tail. The smallest females as adults will need 48"x24" and any male Drymarchon will be pretty big for even that amount of space.

Bigger, meaner, rarer, hot.

12 Sq Ft for an adult male MINIMUM. 8 Sq Ft for an adult female MINIMUM.

Adding a few feet to both would be best.

Copy that.
So basically with the exception of having one or two "show piece" animals in a large display case(s), it sounds as though, unless one's willing to dedicate a whole room to a group of these guys, breeding them is not as manageable as it is with their smaller counterparts.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys!
