anyone - abbotts of abbotts turtle farm?

unchikun Aug 23, 2010 03:36 PM

my junior came from abbotts turtle farm in november 2003, and merilyn abbott was wonderful to communicate and deal with, and always answered any after-sales questions i had. out of curiosity, i went to see what their site was like these days, and it was gone. some googling revealed what is likely sad news... the property is for sale, has been since february 2009, and there is an obituary for a merilyn abbott of cocoa florida who died on january 2, 2009.

does anyone here know the abbotts or know enough to say what happened? she was 76 years old. i hope that she is at peace and knows what joy her junior has brought my jusband and i.

I'd suggest contacting Wayne Hill(contact info on his website). The Abbotts were a fixture at all the Breeders Expo. It's disheartening to read your post. I'm sure many will miss them at the shows.

well, i know for certain that their site is down and their place is for sale -- i hope i'm wrong about merilyn, but the timing and the name on the obit are rather coincidental if i'm not.

I had spoke with Mr. Abbott just after his wife had passed. I felt his pain in his voice. He indicated he did not think he would be at the Expo. I was unaware his property is for sale. He and is wife were icons at every expo and I looked forward to asking him questions and listening to his vast knowledge. He told me of the corn island redfoots which was so cool and his knowlege of tortoises was amazing.

yeah, if you google up the old address for their turtle farm, you can find the real estate listing. it's a nice place... a brick ranch you can tell they took great care of, with pens and an outbuilding in the backyard for the torts. i'm guessing then that maybe mr abbott (i forget his name -- charles maybe?) isn't going to continue the business?

sad to hear confirmation of what i was afraid of. i hope she wasn't suffering any kind of extended illness or otherwise suffering. she seemed like such a lovely person.

I got my sulcata from them as well, I remember her big sulcata walking up to the sliding glass door and sleeping on the porch at her house. Very sad. "oscar" was my first Tort and I am glad I got him at Abbotts Turtle farm...........

I also purchased one of my first aldabras from them. Drove to their house and they were great, this is along time ago. I did not see them at the daytona show latley.
