Found by my garage, what kind??

ProtaZoey Aug 27, 2010 06:56 PM

So we came back from the grocery store a couple hours ago and I found this little guy by the downspout by my garage. I live in SW Florida.

I did some Googling before coming here and it looks to be a green slider maybe??? Could someone take a look at my pics below and help me out so I can take care of it?

No, there is no red on the ears, already checked...that would be too easy, wouldn't it? LOL!

Also, how do I tell if this is a male or female?

Lastly, husbandry for the little one? Special water like distilled or is filtered from my fridge OK? Foodstuffs?

Thanks in advance

looks like a baby cooter.give it a 10 gal tank, filled halfway.you can use bottled or filtered water if you want, but i've kept my turts in plain old city tap water for years, with no adverse effects.
give it a basking spot, where it can haul itself completely out of the water.rocks, bricks, and plastic turtle docks all work well.

if you're keeping it indoors, give it a basking light that provides uvb lighting.you can usually get a clamp on light and bulb for $20 or so,a 75 watt should be more than enough.set the light so that it's within 10" or so from the basking spot.

feed it a varied diet,(if you use commercial pellets, purchase a couple different brands, and mix them up.feel free to add dried shrimp and krill, turtles go nuts for them).as it gets older,it will need more of a vegetarian diet, mainly consisting of water plants.

keep in mind, the turtle will most likely need a larger tank within 6 months.i keep yearlings-2 year olds in 55 gal tanks, after which they move into my backyard pond.

Thanks so much for all your helpful information I was looking to give this little guy to a good friend that recently had her tortoise taken from her back yard (a red footed tortoise, I think?), so I wanted to be armed with information when I showed up. I gave it to her already and she's thrilled. I just called her with all the info in your messages, so she'll be sure to take good care of it Thanks again!
