Available Iguanas?

amast Aug 30, 2010 05:56 PM

Hi! I have had reptiles all my life and have had several friends and family members who owned igs. I find myself wanting one more and more everyday. We have a local reptile show around here and babies are cheap, but they are super fast. I kinda want a larger one, more tame. I think I would rather take in a pet that has been worked with than just one being raised by a breeder? And I would imagine they are harder to ship the bigger they are? If anyone has any ideas of where I could get a nice sized, handleable ig I would be forever greatful. I am in the process of transorming our spare bedroom in to a room for one..almost done!

I find it unethical to buy iguanas at this point, iguana rescues are devastated by the amounts of turn overs and no longer have room. I highly recommend adopting. Try petfinder.com for starters. I'm sure you can find an iguana of any age.

That's what I was leaning towards..finding one that needed rehomed or was in a rescue...it just has to be tame though.we want a family pet and have small children...so a poor ig that has just been caged its whole life isn't gonna work..thanks for the petfinder tip...didn't even think about that for a reptile

with small kids you may want to look at something other than an Iguana. Tail whips HURT and can be strong enough to break bones. No matter how "tame" one may seem you can't trust the children not to ACCIDENTLY do something that could invoke a bit, scratch or whip. Please think through it carefully (as you seem to be already). Gathering information before hand is critical I would tend to look at something other than in iguana as a family pet to interact with children. Bearded Dragons are a wonderful way to start if you are looking in a pet lizard direction. Good luck and I hope you and your family find the perfect pet!

Thank you for your concern...our kids are never allowed to be alone with any of our animals...I was just saying I want something that if I'm holding it or near by they can touch it. I have seen some very sweet igs and some very not so sweet igs...we have had beardies before and they are great pets but we don't want to mess with bugs. Sometimes the igs in rescues have been neglected so long that they just wouldn't be good fit for our family...I think an ig that is used to being handled would work..thanks again

I have rescued tons of green iguanas. Try craigsligt.

Also, if you want that large lizard Maybe consider raising a Cyclura from a baby.

Mine is 5 now, raised her from a hatchling and I am in LOVE. (epecially if your building a room for it )
