Life in the Southern Appalachians

HappyHillbilly Sep 01, 2010 09:45 AM

I was in my local Tractor Supply store the other day, getting a bag of rabbit feed. There was a fella mulling over which type of rabbit feed he should get. He asked if I raised rabbits and I said, "Yes."

He asked if I had any does for sale and I told him that I didn't have does or bucks to spare at the moment. I reckon I looked like a "pet" rabbit breeder to him because he looked me in the eyes and said, "I eat 'em, ya know." as if that was supposed to surprise me.

I grinned at him and said, "I feed mine to my snakes."

After enjoying his expressionless face for several seconds I said, "Have a good one," and I walked away.

Life's hard. Share a smile!

Ya'll take care!

Mike...I had a similar expirence....I was standing in line to pay for a large bag of rat food and the lady in front of me had a bag of rat poison. I looked at the lady and said "I'm trying to fatten the suckers up and you are trying to kill them. Must be some sanity in the world but it isn't here!" lol

Hey HH --

That's a great story..

On another note -- can you recommend any good camping in Western NC around your area? Are there any good hiking trails you recommend?

Thanks!

Hey there!
It's been nearly 20yrs since I've done much of hiking, camping & rappelling and my brain's gotten a bit foggy. It depends on whether you want 1 - 2day excursions or an excursion lasting several days.

The Benton MacKaye Trail Link 1 Link 2 begins in the Blue Ridge,GA area, which is about 30 minutes from me. I'm sure you know that you could get on it & go all the way to Cape Cod, Maine. There are quite a few trails along this route to where you could make your hike as long as you want. I liked the Rock Creek, GA & Stanley Gap, GA pretty well. Link 3

If you're looking for more of a campground-type setting, check out Vogel State Park near Blairsville, GA.

For a beautiful 1 - 2day excursion Jacks River Falls in the Cohutta Wilderness, near Chatsworth, GA, is hard to beat. Check out that link for photos, directions, etc...

Benton, TN has a few decent rock faces if you're into climbing and/or rappelling.

Robbinsville, NC & the Nantahala Gorge (NC) are a few other places you might want to look into. The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is nice and there are some trails, camping in that area.

The photo below is of my brother & wife during a rappelling outing in Benton, TN 19yrs ago. My brother and his son came to visit and my wife and I took 'em rappelling.

If you've got any questions you can shoot me an e-mail.

I love it!
I've been known to lie if it's little kids asking when they see me getting food for my feeders. So ashamed but I can't tell a cute little 6 year old I'm a mass bunny murderer

Yeah, I know what you mean. I usually start talking about how cute the rabbits are and ask the kids questions about rabbits. Only once did the conversation make it back to what I'm going to do with the rabbit(s). I told the lil' girl I was going to take it home, feed & water it, take good care of it, and one day let it have babies. I did just that, too. I still have that doe as one of my main breeders.

I pretty much keep a low profile about my snakes, they're diet, etc... I wouldn't have said to just anybody what I told that fella in the store. I don't know if I just couldn't resist giving him a bigger shock than he was trying to give me or if I subconsciously wanted to show him that he wasn't the biggest freak around town. Ha! Ha!

I don't use rabbits much anymore, since I moved away from the local livestock auction. But I remember returning with about 2 dz, assorted sizes on night. The following morning I dispatched them, and as they all lay there, my daughter (a well-grounded 18 year-old at the time) said.."Dad, I know it's neccesary for the snakes, but I feel like I just read Watership Down, the Final Chapter". Highly intelligent, and well read young woman, eh?

years ago I ran out of frozen rabbits and decided to pick up a rabbit at one of the local pet shops. I decided that I would humanely dispatch the guy before feeding him to one of my snakes. Upon the moment of truth I looked that rabbit straight in the eyes and then folded like a cheap lawn chair. I kept that rabbit for years and we never looked back.

Having been in similar situations, I can relate, very well. Never thought I'd take a likin' to rats but every now & then one comes along and pulls on the ol' heart strings.

Have a good one!

I also learned years ago you can't kill a gerbil the same way you kill a rat or mouse by using the tail.

My daughter finds that book a bit creepy. She's not sure if it's the talking rabbits or the amount of blood.
