Red X Gray Rat Snake (with pics)

FoxTurtle Sep 10, 2010 01:47 PM

This past winter I collected a flawless 5 foot plus male anerythristic corn snake from a structure in the canefields near Lake Okeechobee, FL. When found, this snake reminded me a lot of the large gray rat snakes I've found in North Florida and South Georgia.

So when I found a large female gray rat snake in March this past spring, I collected her to display with my big anery corn.

Several months later, the rat snake became gravid, and laid a clutch of 10 eggs in early-mid July. Being that the rat snake was collected very early in the season, and that several months had elapsed before she began to show signs of being gravid, I was pretty confident these would be hybrid offspring.

A couple eggs have since gone bad, but just today her clutch began to hatch, and already a couple hatchlings have made it out of the egg.

This one came out of a moldy egg, and is somewhat deformed:

This one, however, is flawless:

More pictures to follow once the whole clutch is out.

Very cool post and pictures, congrats I like the partial striped that would make my day to see hatch out. Looking forward to more pics.

Since anery is recessive, it will be interesting to see how the babies color up as they mature!! Man, both the animals are pretty dang close in appearance though!!

That male Anery Corn was collected in the Devil's Garden area, which is known for having very colorful corns. My hope would be that these maintain a gray background while having dark red blotches, sort of like giant Miami corns!

Only 2.1 good hatchlings made it out of this clutch. The rest were pretty deformed, I think as a result of high incubation temps. My only other corn snake clutch (fathered by the same male) also produced a lot of deformed snakes. Seems like rat snake eggs in general are not as heat tolerant as king snake eggs. I'll fix the incubation issues next year.

Any of those deformed snakes survive? just wondering.

The deformed snakes were all fed off to king snakes.

Just wondering, did you keep any of these animals? Are you planning on doing the same breeding? If so I might be interested in a pair.
