Questions about new cresteds

jason Sep 16, 2010 09:26 AM

Ok, I've been wanting to try my hand at crested geckos for a while (something to do when my ball pythons aren't breeding), and my first pair just arrived from ACR.

The male was labeled as "red phantom lineage", the female appears to be a nice harlequin. My knowledge of ciliatus genetics is limited, so can anyone tell me what type of offspring I might be able to expect from this pair?

Also, I know they do well at room temperature. they're cage is tempgunning at between 65 and 68. Is this ok, or should I put a 15 watt bulb on them? Any help would be appreciated. The first photo of the male is no flash, the others are with flash.

I don't know alot about crested gecko genetics, but I do know they tend to be pretty varied in appearance among offspring of the same pair. I would check the breeder's site you bought the geckos from, see if he has paired up similar geckos and check out the pictures. Or just send him an email and ask.

Your cage is too cool...fine for night time but daytime temps should reach between 70-80F...or aim for about 75F, at least in one section of the cage. (its good to have a temperature gradient). A low watt lightbulb on during the day is fine. Set it up on a timer so it goes out after 12-14 hours.

I never had to use any heating with my geckos, as my typical room temperature fell between 73-78F year round. Average is about 75F.

Thanks, I already have some lights in the room set up on a 12 hour timer, so I'll just hook them up a low wattage light on that timer. the room would be normal temperatures, but my fiance likes to keep the rest of the house cold enough to store meat, and despite closing the vents off, the herp room usually doesn't get warmer than 70.

A space heater may help to warm up the room, though probable not worth the cost in electricity if you only have a couple crested geckos in it. In one of my past apartments, which was a 2 bedroom, three floor (upstairs, main floor and basement) townhouse, in the winter, even the upstairs would be below 70F, so I kept most of my reptiles, my rodents in one bedroom with a space heater with built in thermostat, to keep the room 75F. As the room was small, maybe 12'x12' it didn't take much to keep the room warm
