Check out this racer

Any of you guys ever see an adult racer play dead? I've seen babies do it before, but this was my 1st time seeing an adult play dead. I'd put him right side up, & he'd flip back over.

I've never seen the black racer (Coluber constrictor) play dead before. They will rear their head up at you though, thats about as far as they go.

I've only seen hatchlings do it before this one. One was one I hatched out, & the other was one I flipped, it started playing dead as soon as I lifted the rock, I thought I killed it somehow with the rock & when I picked it up up to look for injuries it came back to life & was totally fine.

Weird! I've never seen a defense out of the c. constrictors other than the old bite n' musk, which they do enthusiastically. Very cool.

Andy,
That musk is the reason I don't pick up too many of them, the smell sticks for quite awhile. I don't have pics of it, but I found an adult red sided garter that played dead the same way, it was pretty cool, I think it did an even better job then a hognose even.
