Irregular Stool

DrHyde Oct 02, 2010 12:31 PM

My Dumeril is about 4 years old -usually very healthy. Came home last night and she had made a fairly large cow-patty looking stool. Not liquid, but quite soft, more brown than the usual visible hair etc., and fairly large (and smelly!). What could have caused this?

She ate a rabbit on Sunday and again on Tuesday (still seemed hungry). Also, seems otherwise fine -no audible breathing, puffy throat, runny nose etc.

Thoughts?

Have you always fed your girl rabbits? If you made a switch over to rabbits, it's possible her system isn't used to them. I've always fed my Dumerils mice and rats, but I know some people feed rabbits. It's possible that rabbits are greasier than rats. If it happens again, you could take a picture and we may have a better idea what's going on.

Made the switch to rabbit over 2 years ago, when she got picky and wouldn't eat anything else she was offered. Never had a noticeable problem.

Obviously if it happens again I'll be more concerned, but I'm wondering what caused this, so I can avoid it again, if possible.

Causes could be parasites (potentially consumed in her prey), or the rate of feeding; there is a finite amount of space in a digestive tract, and a higher rate of feeding means that there needs to be a higher rate of passage of digesta.

This is a very general explanation, but please let me know if I should explain further.
