Hey I was hiking in Big Sur a couple days ago and saw a pretty little (about a foot long) greenish snake with a red belly. Unfortunately, it was way too fast for me to get out my camera, but anyone have any ideas what it could be?

The only thing in that area that I can think of with a red belly is the ringneck snake, Diadophis punctatus ssp. None are truly green, but may be blue-ish. None in that area that are really green have red undersides. You may get more help from some of the guys/gals out that way.

Maybe a Ringnecked Snake (Diadophis) or possibly a Striped Racer (Coluber lateralis).

Most definitely a Ringneck Snake (completely harmless). Their color is generally gray, but some individuals can be greenish-looking. Their red bellies also can make them look green, since red and green are opposites on the color wheel.
