Man drilled holes in tortoise's shell

EricWI Oct 16, 2010 04:40 PM

A B.C. man is being investigated for animal cruelty after the SPCA says he drilled holes in a tortoise's shell to create a carrying handle.

Reptile rescuer Mike Hopcraft is now caring for the mutilated tortoise and an abused turtle after what he describes as cruel and unusual treatment.

"He basically installed a handle on his tortoise," Hopcraft told CTV News.

The owner turned over his sulcata tortoise to Hopcraft's rescue group after he said he didn't want it anymore. At the shelter, four holes were discovered drilled through the shell, and a handle held up by wires.

Hopcraft says the owner told him the 30-pound reptile was too awkward to carry.

"Apparently putting a handle on makes it more convenient," he said.

A much lighter box turtle received the same treatment from the same owner, according to Hopcraft. In this case, the owner claimed it was a tether to keep the animal from running away.

A jewel was found glued to the turtle's shell, and rescuers haven't been able to get it off.

The veterinarian treating the reptiles, Adrian Walton, says the drilling would have been painful.

"Underneath the shell is tissue, so this would be like drilling through your fingernail," Walton said.

The distress and pain inflicted on the animals is enough to pursue charges against their former owner, according to the B.C. SPCA.

"We'll most certainly be recommending charges in this particular case. It's a completely senseless and somewhat brutal act against these poor animals," said Marcie Moriarity, the SPCA's general manager of cruelty investigations.

CTV News visited the Delta property where the animals came from. There were other animals on the property, but the owner wasn't home.

The SPCA says it plans to inspect the home next week.

Well they better get ready to confascate all the Conservation research tortoises of the Fl.State Fish and wildlife cons. com. and the TSA Turtle survival Alliance an Internation turtle/tort.Conservation Org. and many more research org.in the USA because this is a common practice to mark them for study and identifacation. I have some here from a TSA rescue on breeding loan.(the famous 2001 hong kong confascation of 4.5 TONS of turtles/torts being smuggled into China)Once again singling out private people without equal treatment under the law,CLEARLY UNCONSTATUTIONAL. I wouldn't recomend it for a handle to carry a tortoise, but its not why, Hes charged with crulity. Just more AR (animal rights)liberal convaluted torchered logic. I cannot see how clipping scales/scutes around the less painful edges of a shell to mark/identify endangered or rescued chelonians is remotely in the same leaque as haphazardly installing a carrying handle on the shell of your pet for convenience IMO!!! Lets just sell pink and blue dyed chicks at Easter time again, or red-earred sliders with tropical scenes painted on their shells like days of old!! I am not a PETA, HSUS, etc. supporter, but this is a bit too far and IS cruelty, or at least STUPIDITY!!!

Well, you missed the point. We all know these people are after PRIVATE PEOPLE and not their Conservation buddy's that do it in the name of Science.(the, "animals should only be held by instatutions" part) I stated that I didnt recomend it for the use he did it for. I personally dont think anyone should drill holes in a perfectly good tortoise shell, but I'm not going to call PETA /HSUS on the current practices of Science. AR's are BAD NEWS, and we need to point out their warpped sense of thinking everytime we see it used. They love seeing you agree with them, even though they hate you too, Stalin's usefull idiot thory. Look out their coming for your Hamster. vic was not talking about notching... they actually drill holes in the marginal scutes through and through.

Spell check FAIL

They're going to have to go after a good number of biologists who use this practice as a marking tool in chelonian studies.

I was in charge of the emys that came in the TSA's 2001 confiscated shipment from Hong Kong. The bigger turtles and tortoises were drilled through the Marginal scutes to make a numerated sequence using the 24 marginals to code a number of tortoises much larger than 24 study animals. The holes were also to assure they didnt get into the pet trade down the road somewhere. I saw it being done, none of us liked it and the person doing it was very good and quick about it. I saw only a few bleed a little. There was 65 emys but hundreds and thousands of other kinds of turtles from the 4.5 TOM shipment. There were Vets on hand as they went from table to table get drilled, blood samples, sex (my part)and notes of their health and injuries. They were sent out to Zoo's and private breeders around the USA to form "Assurence Colony's" Some, are reproducing in captivity, which is clearly "Defying Destiny" Now you know "the hole story". VM........pic of a emys emys that was in that TSA confiscated shipment.

This makes me physically ill. I hope they prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law (which is never harsh enough for what people do to animals.)

Did he drill holes in his children to make them easier to carry, too? Ugh!

I've heard that circumcision is also painful but it seems that most manage to survive it.
