Class II Permit

edbrown_III Oct 23, 2010 01:44 PM

I have had caimens almost 30 years --- I have had them registered class II for the past 20 years or so. Pens are big hurricane proof and reinforced concrete. some I am kosher on facilities.

I religiously renew my permit. this year returned Class II 4 feet or less--- this is a bit of a problem as these caimens are old and over 5-1/2 feet and one is 7 feet.

Any body out there have the same problem in Fla, ? I am in a bit of a pickle as I am as grandfathered in the permits as all get out.

Best regards

Ed

I don't understand your question. Caiman have been class II for several years now haven't they?

Hey Ed,
Yeah that makes no sense to me at all. Just about all caiman species exceed 4' in length as adults. Is FWC contending that anything longer than 4' become class I?
I would email Captain West in Tallahassee for clarification. his email address is:

I agree it makes no sense -- I was wondering if other FL owners got simular statement on their permits---

I wanted to educate myself before I called.

There is no size specifics. Crocodiles (except Dwarf Croc) are class 1, Gavials and Tomistoma are Class 1, Black Caimans are class 1.

All other caimans are class 2, Alligators are class 2

American alligators require a special farming license I believe.

MAybe this size stuff is something new there tring to sneak in, should call them on it and make them remove that wording from your permit ...

I heard a lot of folks never even received there new permits even though they were approved/renewed.

Good to hear from you!--- I was just posting see if there were some other experiences out there. I checke the FAC regulation that they quoted and no size mention.

I had planned to call them any way on this.

Best regards

I keep a gator in FL. They are Class II which have specific caging requirements and require 2.5 acres of land. The caging/land requirements are not required if your animal is less than 4 ft.

You do not need a farming permit to possess.

edbrown_III Nov 01, 2010 07:06 PM

Thats interesting -- I thought you needed a farm permit for an alligator so I never applied for one.

Caimens I have had for 30 years and permits for the last 20---
substantial cages compounds I have --- I figure I am grandfathered in any land requirements as I have had them for a while.

Thanks for the reply and Best regards

I reread your first post and no, my permit does not have a size restriction.

It only says Sell or Exhibit Class I and/or Class II Wildlife (1 to 25 animals)

"The Licensee is authorized to possess Class 2 Crocodylia"

Laura

Good to hear from you-- I finally got ahold of the lady at FWC--

its the land requirement for class II now 2.5 acreas--

I sent a copy of pre 2000 licenses to demonstrate that I was "grand fathered in " so would remove this restriction. --

How much land do you have ? if I am not being too intrusive?--

I would like to get an alligator permit but I thought you needed to be a farmer not a n pet owner

Best regards
