Market Crashing Albino House snakes!

ShiningSnakes Nov 01, 2010 07:51 PM

Sheesh! There's an ad here for someone selling CB albino African house snakes for $95!!! Two years ago, they were $300! What gives?

I know House snakes as a whole have gained a little popularity in the past few years, but for crying out loud, albinos still aren't that common.

I suppose I'm just venting because I've invested a lot of money in my adult albino breeders that will be ready next year. I feel like the market is already a lots before I even produce anything.

Thank you, market crashers.

No, they do sell well enough...and at higher prices than that. Sometimes, people just don't appreciate the value of the animal(s) they're trying to move.

blame the economy, selling snakes is a little more difficult anymore. when I bought a pair of hatchling albino house snakes I think it was like, $450 for the pair. and that was last year. lucky for you though house snakes breed like crazy so in time even with lower prices you'd still make your money back.

Most snakes morphs decline in value over time as they are bred, if you don't believe it, try seeing how much an albino cornsnake goes for. House snakes morphs are a bad investment, they breed like rabbits and eat a ton.

ShiningSnakes Nov 05, 2010 09:41 PM

No, not much more so than most other colubrid species. I would say their only main advantage is they don't need to cycle. It's like they eat anymore than kingsnakes or hogs, and they're certainly not the only snake to lay multiple clutches.

I'm more than aware of prices gradually declining. But a 75% price drop in less than a year is ridiculous. No reason for it at all.

Must be nice to have great connections.

There's people who really like house snakes and appreciate what they are and the morph potentials in them...there's people who just want a cool snake for as cheap as they can get it.

None of the self-respecting breeders of "that type snake" species would sell the animals they produce for such a low price.

Economy crashed pretty much everything.

Regardless, last show I attended there was a guy selling "baby" housesnakes. IIRC, $40.00 each.

He breeds them and sells babies to Monitor owners as food - when folks won't buy them at the shows.

I wouldn't mind owning a housesnake someday, but for $40.00, I can get a corn in any variety of retina-burning color morphs.
