Aldabra Tortoise breeders.

Hoob Nov 04, 2010 02:33 PM

Hi

I live in the UK and have just moved into a new house with a very large garden. I am very keen to start keeping a group of Aldabra Toroises.

I have emailed Alison at Aldabras.com but have had no reply anyone know how I can reach her? Has anyone here purchased tortoises from her?

I would like 1.3 to 2.5 depending on price. When I reach old age I would love to have a breeding group. Aldabra have only been bred by one private person in the UK (and never in zoos).

Anyone have any advice for starting out with Aldabras?

Thanks

I've got some contacts in the UK. Alison... she's hot but not a tortoise person.

You do realize that you are looking at... I don't know... about 100,000 BSP at least... for what you are looking for... if you can find adults.

Who do you know that bred Aldabras in the UK????

I can get you all the babies you want and they can be sexed if you like.

Ed, On Aldab's and Golop's what is a person looking at when an adult or even half grown one has to go to a Vet for some type of average treatment. What would say one needs in the way of money to have set aside or be able to come up with. You cant be lucky forever, one should exspect medical treatment at some point. This of course would be on top of the cost of a building to keep them in Winter in most States. Are they like owning a Lambo!or even a small BMW! I'm waiting until they are so common folks are releasing them in the Everglades LOL. VM.......pic ...Working mans Aldab......

The cost for treating a 200 pound animal is the same as it is for treating a 2 oz animal. The problem is getting it to the office. House calls are $200 to $300 minimum.

Aldabs are one of the more bullet proof tortoises. They are very forgiving animals... which really helps.

Surley the cost of meds.would cost MORE for 200 lbs than 2 oz. I am sure in the long road it would cost a lot MORE not the same as you avarage tortoise. VM

I haven't had to medicate Al yet and he has only reached about 150 lbs but his vet visits and care have not been more than my egyptians... not counting room and board.

thought you had a teaching moment, never mind. vm

Sorry... just speaking from my own personal experience.

I think I laid it out pretty clearly in that if you get away from the logistics of the size... the cost is no different than a pet poodle when it comes to vet bills.

The logistics of the size is the determining factor.

EJ

I will not share the Gentlemans name here (perhaps I can email you details?). He is no longer breeding them.

I'm not sure what you mean about Alison but its my understanding she represents breeding farms?

As there is currently nobody breeding the species in the UK I must import tortoises.

Thanks
