Best all around starter lizard?

DMK81 Nov 10, 2010 08:42 AM

My 6 year old nephew wants a lizard for Christmas and I was wondering what you all recommend. I had my first reptile when I was 9, which was a wild caught eastern fence lizard which made a great pet. Since then I've gotten more into snakes (currently own 20) than the lizards (I have a sandfish skink and bearded dragon). I need to find something easy to take care of (small size, hardy, docile, low humidity requirements, eats mealworms, etc.) and also cheap. After some quick searching, I am consider an armadillo lizard; any other suggestions? Thanks!

I would go with a plated lizard. The Sudan plated lizard is a perfect size, very slow moving, easy to handle, never bites. And very impressive looking to a little kid, best way to introduce some to lizard keeping, hands down. They will live fair as well as scraps and prepared diets. Basically indestructable.

Funny you mention armadillo lizard....they truly are easy to care for and very hardy, as well as inexpensive. The only drawback is that they aren't quite as tame as some lizards but they aren't TOO skittish either. Another choice is a fireskink. Beautiful, hardy, easy to tame and also inexpensive. A fireskink will eat earthworms and cooked egg as well. They do require humidity but are still easy to care for, they need some moist eco-earth to burrow in but they aren't high maintenance at all.
