Mice Color Genetics

AllenSheehan Nov 17, 2010 11:00 AM

This is just a random question that has me kind of stumped. I am breeding my own fancy mice that come in all colors, pattterns and everything is great. But I have a few babbies that popped out that are solid white with black eyes. Whats up with that? I guess thay are leucistic if I had to apply a reptile name to it? I also have many that have a colored coat but have red eyes. How can an animal have albino type eyes with a colored coat. Just curious is all. They all tast the same to the snakes I guess. Its just interesting to see all the different colors and patterns.

Without buying a text on the genetics I could not sort it all out. I can tell you that there are multiple loci for color and that you can get dilutes of colors that give you the pastel look and the red eyes. Likewise you get the Self Ivorys with dark eyes...almost like a blue eyed leucistic ....without the price tag.

The link is to the American Fancy Rat And Mouse Association color standards page; rat colors are given first, then mouse colors are given further down the page.

While not the genetics, it is none the less interesting information on the various colors that rats and mice can have.

I did a Google search, and found this link to a book on Coat Color Genes of the Mouse by Willys K. Silvers. It looks quite technical, so I only skimmed the chapter headings. I hope that it helps.

This link might also be of interest.

It's introductory paragraph states:

"This is a collection of links to sites which which might interest a color genetics hobbyist. The links are presented by species, and under some species there are first links to general color genetics pages and then links to pages about special colors and patterns in that species. The quality of these pages varies a lot from small photo galleries to vast genetic resources. Last checked and updated 2004-09-01."

Some of those mice, especially the long haired and frizzy, are way too cute to feed to a snake!
