Uros on Niger seed?

Shadowwolf Nov 17, 2010 02:57 PM

I know a lot of people opt out of sand in favor of millet or heavy millet mixtures of birdseed for their Uro substrates. I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried different kinds of seeds, particularly Niger seeds for the substrate? Niger seeds are very small, and are a shiny brown/black color: http://product-image.tradeindia.com/00362573/b/2/Niger-Seed.jpg

I figured since Niger seeds are high in protein like millet, it would be fairly similar in dietary value for a Uro. The thing I like most though is the color. Black seeds might bring out the color of a Uro better (particularly an ornate, which I want to get) because of the stark contrast.

What do you guys think?

Thistle seeds are kindda sharp though. But I've never used it. Plus it's a bit expensive...selling for around $2 a lbs....

I agree. They look like small needles and I would be very afraid of having my Uro on those. Millet are small round seeds that pose no threat.

Too much protein is also very bad for Uro's. Hence why almost no Uro owners that know well enough feed any insects
