should I let em sleep or wake em up?

dragonzilla Nov 17, 2010 04:43 PM

Since the weather around here cooled off alot I had to change my light heat upto a 160 watt just because there is a about a 10 degree drop. the 160 gives me good temps evening the basking 105 to 110 anyways kia my dragon about 2/3 of the time she doesn't come out of her box and start to bask in the morning I usually drag her out if shes not up after im up. Would you just leave her alone and if she don't wake up some days then let her sleep or should i keep dragging her out everyday. She eats at least half the time on her own greens one day and supers the next. I'm pretty sure I shouldn't turn the lights off and start brumation because we are treating her coccidea and am now going to do a fecal when she dumps and an exam to see if the medicine made things worse? Should I make her bask everyday or let her stay cool if she wants? oh no offense to the new comer with a Q it's just theres a couple who answer the Q's everytime which is really appreciated because I don't know sh*t barely know how to keep them alive but always care for them. BLah blah blah blah blah speed and the internet it doesnt stop

Seems to be the same question you asked last week. Here is a copy of my reply from then.

"I agree. If she is lethargic, doesn't eat, and stays in a cool dark place she is likely starting Brumation. I would leave her alone and weigh her weekly at first to make sure her weight remains stable. If she remains stable I would disturb her less often. I check my brumating animals every 5 weeks."

I know you gotta hate me for rerunning the forum I just heard letting brumation start when a dragon might have a parasite like coccidea it can be deadly for them to shut down. She keeps gaining weight and pooping about once a week. I need to get her to poop so I can go to the vet I'll be back next week asking about brumation no I jk I'll read my book the dragon manual I hate how it breifly covers subjects. Thanks for everytime you make this website work. I don't know about any other good info forums. thnaks

if she's still having treatments for coccidia then its not really a good idea to let her go fully into brumation. Its fine if she's slow a day as long as she does come out and bask and eat. You can also just take away all the hides, so she has no suitable place to go to hide. Though this may start to stress her out after awhile.

If you have already finished treatment and its just a matter of getting her to hae a bowel movement, feed her high water content food items...hornworms, silkworms are good choices...or pureed carrots, squash or sweet potatoes. Typically after a teaspoon of one of these and she will go within a day or two.
