they cant be crossed.. different genus... other than that only the egg size makes it impossible

there's a story out there about a cornuta breeding a green. The green died. I dont know if there is any truth to it. Also, about a yr back some one posted in the KS classifieds about this kind of hybrid. I and some others questioned it through email to the poster and the ad was removed.

Okay, looking purely at the science of it, not the right or wrong of it:

Cross genera hybrids are possible, as in with camels and llamas or servals and domestic cats. So the fact that they are different genera would not rule out the possibility. Egg size might not be an issue if the Cyclura were the female. My male green used to go after my female Cyclura all the time. I don't *think* he ever made actual contact -- the one time he actually got close enough was during Mayan's first breeding cycle before I knew he was a male. However, their breeding seasons occur during different times of the year and Kismet was in no way receptive to his advances (in fact, she removed several of his toes. I don't know if he'd achieved anything prior to my breaking up the squabble, but I never tried incubating Kismet's eggs.

i dont think that a huge male green iguana can dominate even the smallest female cyclura long enough to mate.. and yes some intergenera crosses are possible but thats because its a human made lable and is not accurate in terms of genetics or most cases when it comes to hybrids, especially in mamals..cats horses... liger tigon etc but in iguana and cyclura its very clear and correct.

I just found this in Wikipedia. Apparently there is a cross genus hybrid iguana that occurs naturally in the Galapagos where the Marine Iguana and the (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) Land Iguana Conolophus subcristatus)over lap on South Plaza Island.

The biggest challenge would seem to be the difference in the breeding seasons of the Cyclura and Iguana. However, in the presence of my Cyclura female, Mayan (my green)'s mating seasons got longer and longer each year.

the galapagos iguanas should be the same genus ... its just a man made lable.. its not genetics

Speaking of hybrids, this guy is the coolest cteno, he has the curiosity of the palearis and the demeanor of the conspic. I don't have a recent photo of him but he's getting really big. KB

I don't think that they can reproduce but I am a beleiver that anything is possible. Just look at what they have done with milksnakes and rat snakes. Imagine what would come out of these two love birds????? lol

There is a Cyclura that is very greenish in color and that is Cyclura carinata from Turks and Caicos. Some of the ones I saw and had turned a remarkable greenish color when warmed up....thanks

Likelihood for success must be slim, or someone would have done it by now, but over time...how else did cyclura delicatesima evolve ?

jf Nov 27, 2010 11:30 PM

its not a cyclura. its Iguana delicatissima

Thanks for correcting that, idea still same...evolution to more heavy bodied iguana.

Extreemosaurus Nov 30, 2010 03:52 AM

UH? I,delicatissima is smaller than green iguanas and most cyclura
